“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
It is said that the distance between two people talking to each other should
be at least a stretched arm: people should feel comfortable in communicating at
that distance.
Let’s suppose that, while talking to you, a person you barely know tries to
come closer and closer to your face. How would you feel? Very uncomfortable.
Why?
Your relationship with that
person doesn’t allow that kind of interaction. Think: how many people have
breathed in your nostrils? To whom have you? I’m pretty sure you don’t walk
around breathing into people’s noses!
I don’t have children yet, so there’s
only one person in the world I can draw so close that my breath would reach her
nostrils.
My wife.
The intimate relationship we
have allows us to be close to each other without feeling uncomfortable.
Regarding the creation of our world, the Bible says that God “spoke, and it was
done” (Psalm 33:9); in man’s creation account, though, we don’t read:
“Then God said: ‘Let there be
Adam!’. And there was Adam.”
We read instead that God took
time to form man’s body from the dust of the ground; then He drew nigh to
Adam’s lifeless form and coming closer to his face He breathed in his nostrils
the breath of life. Imagine to be Adam for a second; you open your eyes for the
first time and… who do you see?
God.
His face close to yours. The
Creator welcomes Adam to life.
Through the way He created us,
God communicates His infinite desire to live with us, to have a deep
relationship with us, His creatures. God wanted to live with Adam and to be
with him from his very first breath. God desires to be a loving Father to you
and your best Friend.
